It is a pleasure to invite you to the 17th International Probabilistic Workshop (IPW2019), which will take place from 11 to 13 September 2019 in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

The International Probabilistic Workshop was founded in 2003 as the Dresden Probabilistic Symposium. The idea was to bring together civil engineers dealing with safety issues and safety concepts in civil engineering. Just as the conference series left its place of origin, the topics continued to grow. The question of the safety of technical systems does not only concern buildings and bridges, but also ships, protection against natural hazards and many other areas. It should be mentioned that today different branches of science (mathematics, physics) and engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, material and petroleum) have to deal with problems of uncertainty quantification, intensively use probabilistic modelling and, therefore, are also welcome to present their work thereby widening the workshop horizon.

The conference series has been firmly established in Europe since 2003. It has been held in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the last one, 16th IPW, was held in Vienna. The number of conference participants has been between 50 and 120.

The conference cultivates a very open and friendly atmosphere, so that many doctoral students present their work there, but it is also a perfect place for knowledge exchange, discussions and multidisciplinary collaboration.

We are looking forward to seeing you all in Edinburgh.
